About Filey

Filey is a former fishing town on the North coast of England. It first became a noted holiday resort in Victorian times when the railways opened up giving city dwellers access to the coast. Much of the town developed during this period and from this prosperous time there remains handsome crescents of imposing Victorian properties, many of these have been converted into hotels, but some continue as private residences.

As a seaside resort Filey is superb, it has a wide sweeping bay framed by red clay cliffs and it is sheltered to the north by the natural stone break-water of Filey Brigg. The bay is blest with lovely golden sands, ideal for relaxing, swimming and a safe place for little children whose only wish is to play at building castles in the sand! Filey Bay is backed by a promenade with picturesque gardens, these provide a pleasant place to sit watching the activity on the beach below, or a lovely place to stroll following a hearty evening meal. At one end of the bay there are some pleasant gaily painted chalet's. It is odd to think that these little huts, not wanted for several years, now change hands for thousands of pounds.

Visitors will find a goodly selection of shops, everything is catered for from food, to clothing, and naturally there are buckets and spades as well as souvenirs.

In the old part of Filey visitors can see pleasant cottages, these are particularly in evidence in the vicinity of Church Street. The impressive church of St.Oswald lies in this area. This is an ancient, spacious church with a strong tower and parts that date back to the 12th century. Until the 16th century St. Oswald's belonged to the Augustinian Canons of Bridlington. Visitors to the church can see a Fishermen's Memorial Window dedicated to those lost at sea, a "weatherfish" on the square tower, and in the crammed churchyard there are tombs, headstones and crosses from several centuries.

Filey has attractions to suit everyone, with its five miles of sand and sea, it caters for all generations. The choice is yours - sun bathing, yachting, surfing, you can even take to the water for a sea fishing trip, but if it is "land only" for you then there are a host of other things to do including golf, bird watching, or simply sitting in a pleasant shaded spot soaking up the friendly atmosphere.

For evening entertainment Filey is second to none, it has plenty of pubs, clubs and amusements. Visitors will find a good choice of restaurants, cafe's, fish 'n' chips, accommodation is plentiful and ranges from self-catering caravan parks to luxury hotels.
